In THE SPIRITUAL FITNESS CHECKUP FOR THE 50 SOMETHING WOMAN, Dr. King talks about many different topics from your spiritual stamina, your meditation (or prayer) time, your self-image, your sexuality, and even about relaxation.

I’m not 50 yet and won’t be for awhile, so there are some things in this book I didn’t quite relate to. I don’t have grandkids, instead I have teenagers, so there were some concessions I made as I read this. But even so, I enjoyed working through the checklists and thinking about how I would compare.

This book really isn’t a devotional, but I used it as one. It starts out like a doctor visit, as they talked about taking your pulse, getting your weight, etc., then it moves on to the spiritual portion with a verse, things to consider and questions to answer. This would be excellent for a small group study and should generate lots of discussion.

If you or someone you know is turning 50, then THE SPIRITUAL FITNESS CHECKUP FOR THE 50 SOMETHING WOMAN is a book to consider. It isn’t very thick and it is short enough that it’s an easy read. But it packs a lot of value.

This is a small full of hope and reflection that gives you the spiritual boost needed to being a new year. The author speaks to female baby boomers but I think it’s a good world for females in their 40’s too. I’m thankful to have received a review copy of a book that’s reflective, fun, hopeful and gets right to the point!

The author is a sociologist and gerontologist who specializes in religion and aging research. As this author turned 50 she was surprised at the need for not only new physical exams to check the aging affects on the body, mind and personality but she saw a great need to have a spiritual check up as well. “The one who created me needed to participate in my midlife assessment process…the focus of life is changing, grand parenting, retirement, “empty nest”, and caring for aging parents. All life events affect us emotionally, physically and spiritually.”

I enjoyed the fact that the book chapters go through a routine physical check up you’d go through with a Dr. She correlates it to what we experience every time we see the Dr. the spiritual exam is something we can use to tone-up our relationship with God.

Each check-up (chapter) has an overview of what’s being checked and why, scripture reflection; a spiritual pulse check and journaling exercises for personal reflection and application. I loved that the chapters are humorous, short, to the point and really made you think.

Here are the title names, I’m sure they will make you smile as they did me. Step onto the scale, please, take everything off and put this on, Now, just relax, make a fist, This may hurt a bit, Can you read the letters on that chart?, It’s time for a treadmill test, Raise your hand when you hear the tone, How’s your sex life?, We need to take a few X-rays and Come Back next year.

The author says, “As we conclude our round of spiritual check ups, God lovingly sends us out to enjoy these exciting middle years. We can hear him say, “Glad we spent this time together. Call anytime you need me and come back next year.”

This book is encouraging, hopeful and not as scary as some Dr. visits. I recommend this book of reflection to be read more than once a year, to stay connect we with God and catch symptoms before they trip you up and/or make you spiritually sick.
